Share the Cultural Legacy of Cambodian Dance

For thousands of years, Cambodian dance was passed directly from teacher to student. This ancient spiritual performing art is a cultural treasure to the Cambodian people.

In 1975, the Khmer Rouge genocide threatened to destroy the unbroken succession of Cambodian dance forever; as many as 2 million Cambodians died. The country lost most of its archives and written history. Performing artists were among the groups hit the hardest; an estimated 90% of the dancers and their teachers perished.

On the eve of this crisis, one researcher engaged by the Cambodian government gathered an extensive body of knowledge about the sacred dance. Ten days before Phnom Penh fell, Paul Cravath escaped with his research intact. He spent ten years organizing his data and continuing his archival study of Cambodian dance. By then, the world had forgotten about Cambodia. His study essentially vanished, only to be seen by a handful of scholars.

In 2008 Cambodia's reawakening continues. Cravath's historic book, Earth in Flower, contains vital heritage lost by the Cambodian people. The author and publisher invite you to help restore this cultural knowledge to the Cambodian people and to the world.
